International Women’s Day 2026: The gender funding gap

As March 8 approaches, conversations around International Women’s Day are focused not just on history or awareness but on real economic impact. The theme for 2026 is Give to Gain, and encourages support, collaboration and shared opportunity for women in all walks of life. That idea matters for small business owners, especially women who still face uneven access to funding and capital despite strong performance from their companies.

Women in business

Women now run more incorporated or self-employed ventures in the UK than ever before - around 1.8 million. And yet, broader support and investment still lag behind the demand and talent out there. Events taking place around International Women’s Day (including local meet-ups and networking breakfasts) reflect both the progress that’s been made and the work still to do.

What business owners need to know

Data shows female-led firms deliver strong returns and growth, yet capital flows don’t always match performance. Less than a sliver of UK venture capital goes to female founders even though the number of women-led scaleups in the country has ballooned in recent years, meaning there’s a huge pool of untapped economic potential being overlooked by investors.

For women entrepreneurs, that challenge plays out every day in decisions about funding, hire plans, pricing and growth. Many women founders tell a familiar story of disciplined, sensible growth being mistaken for lack of ambition, or of being steered toward bootstrapping when capital would speed up scaling. Despite that, women-led businesses continue to carve out space, innovate and expand; they just do it against harder odds.

So as International Women’s Day arrives this year, the conversation for SMEs shouldn’t just be about celebration but action. It’s about:

  • Backing women in business with targeted support whether through mentoring programmes, women-focused grants or investor networks that recognise real performance.
  • Creating opportunities for more visibility and connection. Events and networking brunches are great, but turning those connections into referrals, deals or partnerships is what drives growth.
  • Recognising that support isn’t a one-day thing. Give to gain shouldn’t be a slogan. It should be a mindset in how funding, hiring and collaboration happen day to day.

How Binq can help

At Binq, we see this every time we talk to business owners. Women come in with clear plans for scaling, sensible numbers, a grounded view of risk and a very real chance of success. The barrier isn’t ability. It’s access to the right tools, support and opportunities - funding, insight and connections that move ideas forward rather than holding them back. And we help with that.

So this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate not just what women have achieved, but what they’re ready to do next when the right support comes along.
